The Fourth of July is just around the corner, and Perry residents are gearing up for another fantastic Independence Day celebration. This year marks 249 years since the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, officially breaking ties with Britain and launching the United States of America.
What started as a political rebellion has turned into one of America’s biggest party days. The tradition of celebrating with fireworks began almost immediately – John Adams famously wrote to his wife Abigail that the day should be celebrated with “illuminations” from one end of the continent to the other. He got his wish, though he probably didn’t anticipate quite this much noise and sparkle.
Here in Perry, the holiday brings barbecues, and plenty of patriotic spirit. But while we’re busy celebrating our freedom, it’s crucial to remember our four-legged family members who might not share our enthusiasm for the festivities. Dogs especially can find fireworks absolutely terrifying. Their sensitive hearing picks up frequencies we can’t even detect, and those sudden booms and crackles can send even the bravest pup into a panic.
Smart pet owners start preparing days before the celebration. Create a safe space inside your home where your dog can retreat – maybe a quiet bedroom with their favorite blanket and some calming music. Consider staying home with them instead of heading out to watch fireworks. If you must leave, never take your pet to firework displays, and make sure they’re wearing proper ID tags in case they bolt.
For those planning their own backyard celebrations, remember that fireworks aren’t toys. Florida law requires you to be at least 18 to purchase most fireworks, and many types are restricted or require permits. Always read the instructions, have water nearby, and never try to relight duds. Keep spectators at a safe distance, and clean up thoroughly afterward – leftover firework debris can be toxic to pets and wildlife.
The Fourth of July reminds us that freedom comes with responsibility. That includes being responsible neighbors who celebrate safely and considerate pet owners who protect the animals depending on us. With a little planning, everyone in Perry can enjoy a safe and memorable Independence Day celebration.
